Best-Paying States for Women

Women in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New Jersey had the highest median earnings in the United States last year, according to a report by the Census Bureau.

In 2007, the median earnings for women who worked full-time, year-round in the District of Columbia was $49,364, more than $5,000 better than the median earnings for women in the state of Maryland ($44,022). Women in New Jersey had median earnings of $42,221.

Last year, the state where women had the lowest median earnings was Montana ($26,598). The median earnings for women in the United States overall was $34,278 in 2007.

For men, the state with the highest median earnings was Connecticut ($55,394). Women in Connecticut had median earnings of $41,868, making it the fifth-best-paying jurisdiction. The ranking of all 50 states and the District of Columbia follows.
