Data on Pay Raise Trends

In a BLR webinar entitled "Where's My Raise? How to Handle Tough Pay Conversations With Employees," Theresa Murphy of HR Partner Advantage and David Wudkyka of Westminster Associates chronicled the results of BLR's 2010 Pay Budget Survey which reflect the drastic changes in economic conditions:

  • The average planned general increase in 2010 was 1.27 percent, compared with 1.12 percent given in 2009
  • The average planned merit increase is 1.85 percent, only slightly higher than the average actual merit increase of 1.47 percent reported for 2009
  • Nearly 54 percent of the employers responding to BLR's survey said they gave no merit increases (0 percent) in 2009
