Finance directors in the United States earn about $64,000 more per year than their counterparts in Canada and nearly $100,000 more than those in Germany, according to a survey by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Get Your Report Now!Mercer looked at compensation data in 14 countries, finding that finance directors in the United States are the highest paid, earning $250,000 in base salary on average, followed by those in Canada ($186,400) and the United Kingdom ($180,300) , Their counterparts in Hong Kong, Italy, and Germany earn $168,500, $159,000, and $154,400, respectively.
Annual total cash (annual base salary plus any guaranteed cash plus the actual annual short-term incentive amount) for finance directors follows the same pattern as base pay. US-based finance directors are the highest paid, earning annual total cash of $324,600 on average, followed by those in Canada and the UK , who receive approximately 262,700 and $236,600, respectively.
In the United States, finance directors earned on average about $47,000 more in base salary than marketing directors and about $75,000 more in base salary than HR directors.
"In many organizations, finance directors are the second-highest-paid individuals, receiving only slightly less than the CEO," says Mark Edelsten of Mercer. "The scope of their role has widened in recent years as new regulatory burdens and risk management responsibilities make them increasingly accountable for company governance."
