Fortune Lists Highest-Paying Among the 'Best' Employers

Fortune magazine has published its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2006, which includes a ranking of the highest-paying among those companies.

Among companies on the magazine's list, salaried employees at Russell Investment Group, based in Tacoma, Washington, had the highest average annual pay at $574,373. Overall, the magazine ranked the company 63 on the list of the100 Best Companies to Work For in 2006.

For determining the top-paying employers on the list, the magazine looked at the average pay for the most-common hourly and salaried jobs at each of the 100 companies.

Morrison & Foerster, a law firm based in San Francisco, paid salaried employees the second most among companies on the magazine's best-companies list. Associate attorneys at the company earned an average of $182,905, according to the magazine.

Meanwhile, legal secretaries at Morrison & Foerster earned an average of $67,800, making them the highest paid hourly workers among companies on the magazine's best-companies list.

Methodist Hospital System, based in Houston, paid its hourly employees the second most among companies on the magazine's list. The company's registered nurses-clinical colleagues earned an average of $67,733, according to the magazine.

Northwest Community Hospital of Arlington Heights, Illinois, which ranked 50 on the list of the 100 best employers, paid hourly employees who worked as acute care staff nurses an average of $65,208.

Hourly employees who worked as IT engineers at Qualcomm in San Diego earned an average of $64,792. The magazine placed the company at 23 on its list of the 100 best employers.

Overall, the magazine ranked Genentech as the best employer for which to work in 2006. The company received high marks for its benefits package, which includes an employee stock-purchase plan, eligibility for stock options and bonuses, and a six-week paid sabbatical program.

To form the list, Fortune evaluated the policies and culture of each company and surveyed the opinions of the company's employees.
