pite boosting their salaries, nonprofit organizations continue to face recruitment and retention difficulties, a survey of northern California nonprofits shows.

The survey, published by the Management Center, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, indicates that regional nonprofits are loosing talented staff due to the high cost of living in the area and salaries that are still not competitive with the for-profit sector.

The average vacancy rate reported by the participating organizations was 8.5 percent for full-time positions, and 6.5 percent for part-time positions, while the average turnover rate last year was 30 percent for full-time positions and 40 percent for part-time positions.

The Management Center says its findings are in line with the national trend for increased pay, while the length of the average workweek is unchanged.

During the previous year, the Consumer Price Index calculated for the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area, which includes the 10 Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma, showed a 5.5 percent increase. This is nearly 60 percent increase over the country as a whole, which showed only a 3.4 percent increase.

The survey includes data sampled from over 19,000 individual job positions. Published by The Management Center since 1978, the Survey is an essential tool for determining nonprofit compensation levels and staying competitive in the employment marketplace. The Survey can be purchased via The Management Center's Web site.

The Management Center offers management support for northern California nonprofits.
