How to Respond to, ‘I Want Something Else in Place of My Lost Raise!’

In a BLR webinar entitled "Where's My Raise? How to Handle Tough Pay Conversations With Employees," Theresa Murphy of HR Partner Advantage and David Wudkyka of Westminster Associates offered this advice when confronted with the pay policy complaint, "I want something else in place of my lost raise!"

  • Before you wheel and deal, decide if you're committed to keeping this employee.
  • Explore non-monetary benefits and rewards that will help make up the difference in a lower-than-expected raise.
  • Keep in mind any precedents you may be setting. If this employee wins a non-monetary benefit from you, for example, and then proceeds to brag about it in the breakroom, you could be facing a flood of similar requests from other workers!
