IT salary gains, job increases not significant in 2015, says new survey

The 2016 IT Salary Survey, just released by Janco Associates and eJobDescription.com, may not be great news for IT professionals.

"2015 started out with great expectations for the IT job market as demand was high, and IT budgets were scheduled to increase significantly. Unfortunately, that is not how the year ended," said Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco Associates.

In general, staff level IT positions have not seen much pay fluctuation over the past 8 years, says a Janco press release. According to the survey, compensation for all IT professionals increased by only 1.39% in the last 12 months. However, compensation for CIOs in large organizations is now $189,672 (up 2.33%) and $174,124 (up 1.21%) in mid-sized enterprises.

Jobs

The survey found that the IT job market grew by 125,700 versus 129,400 in 2014. And median CIO tenure remained at 4 years and 4 months from the previous year.

Technology centers like San Francisco (Bay Area), Chicago, Atlanta, the District of Columbia, New York State, and Washington State continue to lead the way in new IT job creation.

Positions in highest demand are all associated with security, training, large data center management, distributed/mobile system project management, quality control, bring-your-own-device (BYOD) implementation, capacity planning, and service level improvement, according to the survey.

Also, mandated requirements records management systems and electronic medical records have increased the demand for quality control staff and custodians (librarians) of mechanized records.

Benefits

Companies are continuing to refine the benefits provided to full time IT professionals. Though benefits such as health care are available to 80% of IT professionals, who are now paying a greater portion of that cost.

Since 1996, Janco has compiled IT compensation data semiannually in January and July. The IT Salary Survey is based on Janco's IT professionals' compensation database and addresses both base salaries and total compensation.
