Fifty-two percent of respondents report that their organization's overtime costs decreased from 2008 to 2009.

Only 18 percent of employers say their overtime costs have increased in 2009. The remaining respondents said their overtime costs have remained about the same as there were in 2008.

Since the steep downturn in the economy in the summer of 2008, employers have initiated a range of cost-cutting measures, including restrictions on overtime and, in many cases, layoffs. If the economy rebounds in 2010, overtime costs may rise as employers try to meet increased demand. Compensation.BLR.com and HR.BLR.com will conduct a similar poll on overtime costs next year to see if there is a change.
