When Independent Contractors Should or Should Not Be Used

Independent contractors make sense when an organization needs to do any of the following:

  • to fulfill temporary or intermittent needs
  • to fill in for absent workers
  • to gain access to special skills, knowledge, or experience

Independent contractors do not make sense when an organization experiences any of the following conditions:

  • there are morale problems
  • too much extra training is required
  • it is not cost-effective
