The Florida minimum wage will rise 12 cents to $7.79 per hour, effective January 1, 2013. The minimum wage for tipped employees will rise from $4.65 to $4.77, based on a tip credit of $3.02. The increase is the result of a 2004 constitutional amendment that created Florida’s minimum wage and tied it to inflation.

Get Your Report Now!The increase is calculated annually by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity based on the percentage increase in the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers in the South Region for the 12-month period before September 1, 2012.
Florida’s minimum wage applies to all employees in the state who are covered by the federal minimum wage. The new rate is 54 cents higher than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
Florida is 1 of 10 states that index minimum wages to inflation. The other states are Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Washington has the highest state minimum wage, at $9.04 per hour.
