Florida has passed a measure that prohibits local governments from requiring that private-sector firms pay employees wages higher than the federal minimum wage, according to the Associated Press.
Gov. Jeb Bush signed the bill last week. The Florida Legislature had approved the measure last month.

level for their employees and those of contractors of the local governments,
according to the AP.
The news agency notes no local Florida governments require a higher minimum
wage for the private sector. The measure is an attempt to prevent living wage
ordinances like that of Santa Fe, N.M. Supporters say Florida's measure will
allow employers with employees in more than one city to pay the workers similar
wages for doing similar work.
Opponents tell the AP the measure means that local governments will have less
flexibility to adapt to local economic conditions.
