Maryland Boosts Minimum Wage

Lawmakers in Maryland have voted to override Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s veto of a bill to raise the minimum wage, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The minimum wage in Maryland will rise from $5.15 per hour to $6.15 per hour. The law will take effect in 30 days.

Ehrlich has argued that the increase will hurt small businesses.

The General Assembly's action is the second defeat of an Ehrlich veto recently. Last week, lawmakers voted to override a veto of legislation that will require large employers to spend at least 8 percent of payroll on healthcare benefits for employees or pay the difference into the state's health program for low-income families.
