House of Representatives passed an increase in the federal minimum wage by a vote of 282 -1143. The wage would climb to $6.15, a hike of $1, over a period of two years.

President Clinton, however, vowed to veto the measure if passed by the Senate. He was upset over House Republicans tying a a $122 billion tax cut to the bill in a combination legislative package.

"Once again, the Republican leadership has derailed what should be a simple vote on the minimum wage with a maximum of political maneuvering," Clinton said after Thursday night's vote. "Congress should send me a bill I can sign, not one I have to veto."

Republican lawmakers say the tax package will help cushion the blow for businesses in coping with the increased costs of raising the minimum wage. After reading over and over again, however, about employers who can't find help at any price, wonder what all the fuss is about.
