Minimum Wage in New Jersey and Maine Set to Rise

The minimum wage in New Jersey and Maine will increase next month.

In Maine, the minimum wage will rise from $6.35 per hour to $6.50 per hour effective October 1, 2005.

An employer may credit an employee's tips up to a maximum of 50 percent of the minimum hourly wage if the employer gives the employee advance notice. The employer must be able to show that the employee receives at least the minimum hourly wage when direct wages and the tip credit are combined. If the employee shows that the actual tips received were less than the tip credit, the employer must increase the direct wages by the difference.

In New Jersey, the minimum wage will rise to $6.15 an hour on October 1 and to $7.15 an hour on October 1, 2006.
