Updated Drug-Free Program Announced By Comp Board
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) has created a new Drug-Free Safety Program (DFSP) that will be available to employers on July 1. The DFSP will replace Ohio’s current Drug-Free Workplace Program. It was created as a result of recommendations from a comprehensive study of the workers’ compensation system and services. The new initiative extends eligibility to more employers and eliminates the current program’s participation limit of 5 years. It provides premium discounts from 3 percent to 7 percent for participating employers.

According to Dr. Abe Al-Tarawneh, superintendent of the BWC’s Division of Safety and Hygiene, the program will provide measurable results. “The DFSP’s design process included a thorough review of scientific literature in this area, benchmarked similar programs at the national level, and consulted with experts including NIOSH and The Ohio State University.” Input was also sought from employers and employees.
