The Equal Pay Act requires that employers pay equal wages to men and women for performing substantially equal jobs.

Equal Pay Act complaints filed with the EEOC have fallen nearly 50 percent in the last five years. There were 1,256 such complaints in 2002, the most since 1995.

Overall, the EEOC received a total of 75,768 discrimination complaints against private sector employers in 2006, up from 75,428 in 2005 and the first increase since 2002.

The agency says a record 4,901 pregnancy discrimination charges were filed with the EEOC and with state and local fair employment practices agencies last year.
