Paid sick leave coming to Los Angeles

On April 19, 2016, the Los Angeles, California city council voted in favor of a proposed ordinance that would provide 6 days of paid sick leave per year to Los Angeles employees. The City Attorney has been given several weeks to draft an ordinance, and if that ordinance passes another vote by the city council, the ordinance would go into effect for employers with more than 25 employees on July 1, 2016. For smaller employers with fewer than 25 employees, the ordinance would take effect in July, 2017.

The proposed ordinance would require Los Angeles employers to provide twice the amount of paid sick leave currently required under state law. Under the proposal, employees who have worked at least 30 days for the same employer within a year would be entitled to paid sick leave.

Current employees would start accruing sick leave on July 1, 2016. Employees hired after July 1, 2016, would start accruing sick leave immediately. The ordinance would allow employees to use paid sick time for themselves and family members. The accrual rate would be 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, which is similar to the state law.

BLR® will be monitoring the proposed ordinance and will report on the final proposal from the City Attorney and any further clarification in how and when the ordinance will take effect.
