Massachusetts nursing homes owe $132,000 for unpaid vacation

Four nursing homes in Norwood, Braintree, and Waltham have agreed to pay more than $132,000 to resolve charges that they failed to pay earned vacation wages to terminated employees, Massachusetts Attorney General (AG) Martha Coakley recently announced.

The AG’s Office launched an investigation after a former employee of Ellis Nursing Homes, Inc., in Norwood filed a complaint in January 2013 that she was not paid earned vacation time upon termination. The investigation extended to other nursing homes, including Grove Manor Estates, Inc., and Glen at Grove Manor, Inc., in Braintree and Meadow Green Nursing Home, Inc., in Waltham. In all, investigators found that 209 employees were denied earned vacation wages at the four homes.

Under the terms of the settlement, the nursing homes will pay restitution to all 209 former employees along with penalties to the commonwealth. All of the companies fully cooperated with the AG’s investigation.

“Failure to pay wages is a violation of Massachusetts law that must be enforced to protect employees who earned their pay,” AG Coakley said. “We are pleased that this settlement will bring restitution to the former employees who were affected by the actions of these companies.”
