The poll, which was conducted in early January, asked respondents whether their organization would be ready by the January 16 deadline to comply with the new FMLA rules.

In the poll, which included 225 respondents, only 10 percent of respondents said their organization wouldn't be ready by the January 16 deadline. The remaining respondents (16 percent) said their organization isn't covered by the FMLA.

In November, the Department of Labor published new regulations covering the FMLA. The new FMLA rules address several areas that have given employers headaches over the years. The new rules bring a host of changes for both employers and employees. Many of the changes involve how and when employers and employees communicate with one another about leave involving the FMLA. The effective date of the rules is January 16, 2009.

The editors of HR.BLR.com created a resource center to help employers ensure that their organization is in compliance with the new Family and Medical Leave Act rules. The resource center includes regulatory analysis, guidance, FAQs, forms, a poster, news articles, and white papers--all of which cover the new FMLA rules. You can find the resource center at: http://hr.blr.com/resource_centers.aspx?collection=21
