FedEx Bias Suit Granted Class-Action Status

A federal judge has certified as a class-action a lawsuit alleging FedEx Corp. discriminated against workers on the basis of their race in its pay, promotions, and performance-review practices, the Associated Press reports.

The lawsuit could include as many as 11,000 current and former employees in 14 states. The lawsuit alleges the company paid minorities less and promoted minorities at a lower rate.

The company says it bases its pay and promotion decisions on objective criteria, including time of service, passing a basic skills test, and previous performance evaluations, the news service reports.

"We are confident that when the merits of the case are considered, it will be shown that the plaintiffs were not treated differently because of their race or ethnicity," says Jim McCluskey, a FedEx spokesperson.
