Federal Employees to Get Retroactive Pay Increases

After weeks of delay, federal employees will receive a 4.1-percent raise passed by Congress, the Washington Post reports.

The raise will be retroactive to January 1, when federal employees began receiving a 2-percent pay increase because Congress had yet to pass a massive spending bill. President Bush had proposed a 2-percent raise in his 2004 budget, but Congress passed a bigger raise, which the president opposed.

With passage of the annual spending bill, federal workers will now receive the same pay increase as members of the military, the newspaper reports.

"Thankfully, members of Congress recognize the valuable contributions of federal employees who daily risk their lives to support this nation's war on terrorism both abroad and at home," says John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees.
