y experts say there will be plenty of work for IT people after the software bug issues relating to January 1, 2000 subside - probably by March or early April. For one thing, there has been a tremendous amount of work that has simply been postponed for the last year while coping with Y2K threats. For another, the IT personnel shortfall has been so severe for so long that all the available talent could be used simply to tackle Internet and other pressing software issues.

As an example, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article, 100 Y2K specialists at Household International will work on customer data projects to enhance what the firm can learn about its customers and prospects.

And many small companies and government offices haven't taken on Y2K yet. Others will face corrections and fixes after their computers get thrown into a tizzy by all those zeros popping up on hidden computer chips on January 1, 2000.
