How Long Do Employees Stay on the Job?

Contrary to what you may have heard, employee tenure is about the same now as it has been for many years. In fact, says the Employee Benefit Research Institute (www.ebri.org), job tenure has remained essentially the same for the last 25 years.

The median tenure of workers--the midpoint of wage and salary workers' length of employment in their current job--was 5.1 years in 2008, compared to 5.0 years in 1983. The trend for male workers is down, from 5.9 years in 1983 to 5.2 years in 2008, but has increased for female workers. Women stayed an average of 4.2 years in the same job in 1983, compared to 4.9 years in 2008. Private sector works stayed level, at 3.9 years. Public sector employees experienced an increase, from 6.0 years in 1983 to 7.0 years in 2008.
