Retention bonuses fly high as fighter pilots offered up to $225K to stay on

The U.S. Air Force wants to keep hundreds of experienced fighter pilots, so it is offering up to $225,000 in retention bonuses, according to media reports.

Under the Aviator Retention Pay program, bonuses will go to those willing to sign on for another 9 years. The bonuses will be paid in annual increments, with some officers eligible to receive up to 50 percent of the bonus upfront minus taxes.

While this may seem surprising in a period of military financial cutbacks, it may actually be a money saver. “The purpose of the program is to retain highly qualified aircrew members at a fraction of the cost incurred to train new rated officers, said Air Force Rated Force Policy-Mobility Forces Chief Lt. Col. Stuart Rubio, in a release by the Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs.
